Medication in School

As per guidelines set forth by the N.J. State Department of Education and the Mt. Olive Township School District policy, children are not allowed to carry or have medications in the classroom. Forms are available from the Health Office or the Health Office website that satisfy all necessary requirements listed below (Numbers 1 through 5) regarding medication administration at or during school. If needed on school time, medications will be kept in the nurse’s office and dispensed by her at the proper time.  In addition:

1.     The Parent/Guardian must provide a written request for the administration of medication.

2.    We must also have an original written order from your doctor for any medications that must be taken at school including over the counter medications. Each new school year requires a new set of physician orders.   This order must include:

• a.    Diagnosis.

• b.    Name of medication.

• c.     Dosage and time it is to be given.

• d.    Is child to receive medication on half days?

• e.     May medication be withheld for field trips, as most often a nurse is not available?

• f.      If medication is an inhaler, may he/she carry it and self administer?

3.    All medications must be in the ORIGINAL PHARMACY CONTAINER properly labeled for the student.  Ask your pharmacist for the medication to be divided into two bottles completely labeled; one for home and one for school.  Do not send medications in baggies, tissues, envelopes, etc., as it is against the law to dispense unlabeled medication.

4.    Students are not allowed to carry medications on the bus or into school. An adult must drop off the medication in the Main Office or in the Health Office.

5.     Over the counter drugs are also medication; i.e. cough drops, tylenol, etc. These are to be addressed in the same manner as prescription drugs.

6.     Administration of Epinephrine, asthma medications and self-administration of medication for asthma or other potentially life-threatening illnesses require additional documentation. Please contact your school nurse for these forms.

Inhaler Use in School

1. The N.J. Department of Education now mandates that the Asthma Treatment Plan form be on file at school for all students who wish to use an inhaler at school regardless of diagnosis (i.e. asthma, reactive airway, etc.).

2. This form is available in triplicate from the school nurse, or via download in the 'medical forms' drop-down section of this website.

N.J.A.C. 6A:16(b)3ii – Health Services Personnel The district board of education shall employ a certified school nurse to provide nursing services while school is in session. The certified school nurse is responsible for conducting health screenings which include height, weight, blood pressure, hearing, vision, and scoliosis.

ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF THE MENINGITIS FACT SHEET 
(please see 6th grade letter distributed annually)

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-21.2 requires that school districts annually distribute the educational fact sheet on meningitis to parents or guardians of students entering sixth grade. The fact sheet is also available to private schools, although they are encouraged, but not required, to distribute the fact sheet. The fact sheet can be accessed and downloaded here.

ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF FACT SHEET ON HUMAN PAPILLOMAVIRUS (HPV)
(please see 7th grade letter  distributed annually)

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-42 requires public schools to annually distribute a fact sheet about vaccination against HPV to parents or guardians of students in grade seven. Private schools are encouraged, but not required, to distribute the fact sheet. The fact sheet is available here.

ANNUAL DISTRIBUTION OF FACT SHEET ON SPORTS-RELATED CONCUSSIONS AND CONCUSSION MODEL POLICY GUIDANCE

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-41.3 requires each school district, charter school, renaissance school project, and nonpublic school that participates in interscholastic athletics to adopt by September 1, 2011, a policy concerning the prevention and treatment of sports-related concussions and other head injuries among student athletes.  View BOE Concussion Policy.

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-41.2 requires public schools to distribute the annual educational fact sheet on sports-related concussion and head injury to the parents or guardians of students participating in inter-scholastic sports and cheerleading and to obtain a signed receipt. ANNUAL IN-SERVICE ABOUT ASTHMA -Provided by district in-service GCN training

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-12.9 requires annual asthma education opportunities for teaching staff. The Pediatric/Adult Asthma Coalition of New Jersey provides support to schools regarding asthma requirements.

ANNUAL IN-SERVICE ABOUT BLOOD-BORNE PATHOGENS -Provided by district in-service GCN training

Federal Occupational Safety and Health regulations require annual in-service training for school staff. N.J.A.C. 8:61-2 (New Jersey Department of Health regulation) requires public and nonpublic schools and day care facilities to establish policies and procedures for handling blood and bodily fluids, and policies and procedures for post-exposure management. Schools and day care facilities are required to provide training and appropriate supplies for all school personnel.

EPINEPHRINE TRAINING PROTOCOLS -Training provided by school based certified nurse

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-12.6 requires that , in consultation with the board of education, school nurses designate and train school employees who volunteer to administer epinephrine when the school nurse is not physically present at the scene. Please note that licensed athletic trainers who volunteer are not in violation of the Athletic Training Licensure Act. IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR SCHOOL-AGE YOUTH

School districts are required to annually review the immunization records of all students, pursuant to N.J.A.C. 6A:16-2.2(a), and it is the responsibility of the certified school nurse to review all immunization records under N.J.A.C. 6A:16-2.3(b)3v. The NJDOE provided additional information to schools regarding enrollment considerations for homeless and immigrant students on August 23, 2016. JANET'S LAW 

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-41a through 41c requires public and nonpublic schools to have automated external defibrillators and to establish emergency action plans for responding to sudden cardiac events.

SCHOOL PHYSICIAN

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:40-1.1, the appointed school physician, as a requirement of his or her contract, must complete the Student-Athlete Cardiac Screening professional development module and provide a copy of the certificate to the school. The professional development module can be found here.

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN YOUNG ATHLETES PAMPHLET 

Pursuant to N.J.S.A. 18A:40-41c through d, school districts must distribute the Sudden Cardiac Death In Young Athletes pamphlet to each student-athlete and to the parents or guardians of the student-athlete. The pamphlet can be found here.
