Brooke Russo admires some brightly colored abstract sculptures

More than 800 pieces of student art were on display at the annual Sandshore K-5 art show held in the evening of May 22. From still lifes to self portraits, paintings to sculptures, there was art in a variety of subjects, styles, and mediums.

About 500 parents, family members, and friends attended the show.

“The turnout was just amazing,” said art teacher Ric Heckman. “People were actually waiting outside before the show for the doors to open.”

The day after the show, the students themselves had an opportunity to take the tour and see their artwork, and the artwork of their classmates, displayed in the school gym and in the hallways. Each class took a few minutes out of the day to walk through the exhibition.

Some of the most popular pieces were abstract sculptures emulating the work of artist Alberto Giacometti and portraits of U.S. presidents.

“I am always impressed at the creativity and effort Sandshore students put into their work,” said Bob Allen, school principal. “This was one of the best art shows we've had. Ric Heckman has such an ability to bring out the artist in everyone.”
