This course follows the mainstream English I curriculum. The writing process is reviewed, and modes of writing such as narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasive are practiced. Methods of organization in paragraphs and essays are learned. Students evaluate their own writing and that of others using specific criteria. This course focuses on thinking strategies and skills such as concept formation and information processing, and writing essays. These strategies are learned through a thematic approach with themes such as "Self Awareness," "Self-Growth" "Awareness of Others" and "Interaction with Others". Students relate the themes of specific works to their own life experiences. The characteristics of the different literary genres are also studied.
