Youth Leadership in Public Safety Academy Inspires the Next Generation of Leaders

The Mount Olive Township School District’s inaugural Youth Leadership in Public Safety Academy was a tremendous success, giving middle school students an unforgettable week of hands-on experiences, leadership development, and opportunities to learn from the public safety professionals who serve their community.
Held July 13-17 at Mount Olive Middle School, the weeklong program brought together 29 students entering grades 6-8 for an immersive look at careers in public safety while helping them develop the skills and confidence needed to become leaders in their schools and communities.
Throughout the week, students had the opportunity to interact with professionals representing 12 different public safety agencies and organizations, gaining insight into the many careers and responsibilities involved in keeping a community safe.
The program featured demonstrations and presentations from organizations including the New Jersey State Police Aviation Unit, Picatinny Arsenal, the Morris County Sheriff’s Office, the NJ Transit Emergency Services Unit, Mount Olive Township Emergency Services, and the Mount Olive Police Department. Students were introduced to specialized areas including K-9 operations, bomb response, emergency response, crime scene investigations, aviation, and other aspects of public safety.
While career exploration was an important component of the academy, the program was about much more than learning about public safety professions. Students participated in team-building activities, public speaking, problem-solving scenarios, and leadership exercises designed to strengthen communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
“Leadership is built through service, communication, and accountability, not by title or position,” said Mount Olive Township School District Director of Security James Carifi.
One of the most rewarding aspects of the week was seeing students grow more confident as the program progressed. Students who arrived on the first day somewhat reserved and uncertain were soon working together, speaking in front of their peers, solving challenges as a team, and encouraging one another.
“By the end of the academy, they were standing confidently in front of their peers, communicating effectively, solving problems as a team and demonstrating the qualities of emerging leaders,” Carifi said.
The academy also emphasized the importance of service and civic responsibility. Students learned that leadership can take many forms and that they can make a positive difference regardless of the career they ultimately choose.
For students interested in public safety, government, or public service, the academy provided a unique opportunity to learn directly from professionals and develop relationships with mentors in the field. For all participants, the experience provided leadership skills that can be applied in the classroom, on athletic teams, through community service, and throughout their future careers.
The week concluded with a special graduation ceremony on July 17, where students were recognized for their successful completion of the academy. Family members, friends, and district staff gathered to celebrate the students and their accomplishments. Each participant received a Certificate of Completion.
Perhaps the greatest success of the academy was the sense of community that developed among the participants. Students from different schools, backgrounds, and experiences came together as a team and left the program with new friendships, shared experiences, and a deeper appreciation for the individuals who serve their community.
“The greatest measure of success isn't simply what students learned during the academy, it's seeing them leave believing they can make a difference,” Carifi said.
The Mount Olive Township School District is proud of the students who participated in the inaugural Youth Leadership in Public Safety Academy and grateful to the public safety professionals and organizations who shared their time, expertise, and experiences with the next generation of leaders.
The success of this summer’s program has laid the foundation for the Youth Leadership in Public Safety Academy to return next summer, continuing the district’s commitment to providing students with meaningful opportunities to explore careers, develop leadership skills, and discover their own potential.
